Security Message for US Citizens: Unscheduled Protest – Avoid Downtown Asuncion
Please be advised that anti-amendment protests are ongoing downtown this afternoon into this evening, especially in the area of the Congress. There is no clear timeline for termination of the protests or votes on the amendment.
U.S. Citizens are advised to avoid the downtown area until further notice. Protestors are currently in the vicinity of Plaza de Armas, but the general area of downtown Asuncion south of the Costanera is subject to disruption.
Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
