On behalf of the people and Government of the United States, I extend my sincere congratulations to the people of Paraguay on the 208th anniversary of your independence on May 15.
The United States and Paraguay have a long history of friendship. We are honored that the legacy of U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes, who helped Paraguay settle a land dispute in 1878, lives on in the names of your town squares and, streets.
Last month, I had the privilege to be the first Secretary of State to visit Paraguay since 1965. During my meetings with Paraguayan officials, we further strengthened the U.S.-Paraguay relationship, grounded in advancing shared interests and values including democracy, human rights, and free, fair, and reciprocal trade. I commend you on the important strides you have made in increasing transparency, combatting corruption, fighting transnational crime, and creating economic opportunity.
The United States values our longstanding partnership with Paraguay. I wish all Paraguayans a happy Independence Day celebration.
